Super E® Programme Moves Forward
Canadian Homes – Engineered For Living
Super E® – the scheme which represents a new standard for energy efficient housing – has received a boost to its UK campaign with major new announcements from Sunley, Viceroy Homes and leading insurance company, Zurich. The Super E® Programme which launched in the UK in April this year, uses eco-friendly, timber panel method building techniques.
- Sunley, the company which built the UK’s first Super E® house at the Lacuna development in Kings Hill, West Malling, has signed an agreement to build a further 30 Super E® homes in the next phase of the project. The new homes, which will be built in Zone B of the development, should be completed by the end of September 2003. Sunley is also negotiating to develop Super E® homes in Zone B1 with plans for a show unit and a courtyard. James Sunley comments, “I am thrilled that we at Sunley are leading the way in revolutionary energy efficient homes in the UK using the Super E® concept. It is a testimony to the partnership with our Canadian friends across the Atlantic that we are able to offer UK home buyers a superior energy efficient and altogether healthier environment.”
- Canada's Viceroy Homes is the latest company to become a partner in the UK scheme. Already a partner in the Super E® for Japan, Viceroy is Canada's largest manufacturer of energy efficient, pre-engineered timber framed homes with markets in Japan, Europe, South America, Korea, and China as well as Canada and the US. With their recent trend towards timber frame construction, the UK and Ireland have been identified as major markets for Viceroy. John Kelly of Viceroy comments, “With an increased focus in providing energy efficient homes in the UK, Viceroy feel that as part of the Super E®, we can greatly assist UK house builders in meeting and exceeding legislated energy efficiency targets.”
- After a thorough review of the Super E® system, leading insurance company Zurich has concluded that the system is not only effective, but is a positive development for UK house building. It has already insured a Super E® house for Sunley under that basis and a new chapter outlining the Super E® standard has been included in Zurich’s technical manual. With customers in over 60 countries worldwide, Zurich is one of the world’s largest insurers. Following the review of Super E®, all Zurich surveyors have been made familiar with the system and, the company says, they have complete confidence in it. Martin Horsler, Manager of Zurich Insurance Building Guarantee comments “In our experience, claims from new homeowner's are often heightened by their disappointment with the 'living quality' of their new home. The Super E® design in our view offers a technological advance which directly and positively addresses this. It is why we have ensured that we are in a position to assist housebuilders who want to use Super E®.”
The Super E® Programme was developed by the Canadian Government in 1999, it is cooperatively delivered by Natural Resources Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation International with support in the UK from the Canadian High Commission. A Super E® home can reduce space heating costs by up to 30 percent, while providing homeowners with a durable, economical, healthy and comfortable home which is also environmentally friendly. The Super E® Programme has already enjoyed particular success in Japan, and looks set to do the same in the UK as consumer, builder and government interest in energy efficient housing increases. Oliver Drerup, of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation comments “I am pleased to see that the Super E® Programme has been expanded to the UK. This co-operative Programme offers significant export opportunities for Canadian companies, and will provide economic and environmental benefits to both Canada and the United Kingdom.”
