Demand for Super E® Homes Soars

The demand for Super E® housing in the UK has increased by 740% since the launch of the first home in April 2002. UK construction companies already signed up to the Super E® program are doubling, trebling and quadrupling their orders, making sure that they are at the forefront of providing quality homes with a competitive edge.

The reasons for the enormous growth and demand are numerous. Capital Homes have hailed the fast build times, and energy efficiency offered by Super E® housing. Environ Sunley, have acclaimed the health and environmental benefits offered by Super E® housing and the latest company to join the Super E® program, DGS Construction Ltd., have highlighted their delight in the design flexibility offered by Super E® homes.

Super E® is a Canadian concept currently being introduced across the UK. The program is specifically focused on adapting 50 years of Canadian construction experience for a large variety of climates, ranging from Canada’s arctic to maritime climates of the east and west coasts, as well as foreign markets. Super E® was developed for international markets by Natural Resources Canada and is being delivered in partnership with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Canadian High Commission. Together with the expertise of the National Research Council of Canada, these agencies work closely with the industry to accelerate the research and development of world-leading, energy efficient and healthy housing technologies. The homes are healthier through improved air quality, quieter and more energy efficient because of high levels of insulation and brighter due to innovative design of internal space.

The Super E® House Program teams UK firms with Canadian housing exporters who provide design expertise, technology transfer, marketing and sourcing of products and materials necessary to construct Super E® homes.

Oliver Drerup, Manager Export Products and Services CMHC comments, “We are really pleased with the progress we have made with Super E® since the initial launch in the UK in April 2002. We are confident that many of the techniques we have developed in Canada will continue to be adopted by other builders throughout the UK. The techniques which Super E® promotes make perfect sense.”

DGS Construction Limited – the latest to sign up to Super E® Program

DGS Construction Ltd. is the latest UK company to sign up to the Super E® program and has teamed up with the Canadian company DAC International to build the first bespoke Super E® home in Cornwall.

The partnership came about after DGS Construction Ltd. purchased an old timber military barracks/bungalow, which was uneconomic to renovate as the building had not been lived in for a number of years. The company employed a local architect to design the replacement home – bringing to fruition owners Doug and Sarah Stewart’s concept. The designs were given to DAC International to create the timber panel structures for the bespoke home, while providing the final product with very high standards of insulation and under-floor heating on both floors. DGS will be importing the Super E® design and concept to the UK, and building the homes for the UK self-build market.

Doug Stewart of DGS Construction Ltd. explains, “I attended a Super E® seminar and left extremely impressed by the modern, light, energy efficient housing on display. As a result, I visited DAC International in Ottawa to discuss the opportunity to work together as Super E® partners. Our trip proved a huge success and we are confident that Super E® homes, tried and tested in the extreme conditions of Canada, will have a great future in the UK.”

Chuck Jackson, from DAC International comments, “I’m certain that our experience with high performance housing – from design, through pre-fabrication and supply – will help DGS Construction to produce a sought-after housing product. The early success of the Super E program has encouraged us to double our manufacturing capacity, allowing us to pursue larger projects in the UK with confidence.”

Carn Mor – The First Scottish Super E® Community

The owners of the first state-of-the art and innovative Scottish Super E® home, launched in February this year, took occupation in July, marking the beginning of the first Super E® community in Inverness. Capital Homes Ltd in partnership with Interhabs UK, teamed up with the Government of Canada to produce this superior quality home. Since its launch, the home has proved to be a huge success with the developer and customers alike, and all the homes on the Carn Mor Development will now be built using the Super E® concept.

Bill Nelson, owner of Capital Homes comments, “The Super E® housing program has enabled us to offer an enhanced product in the market place. By incorporating the many benefits offered by Super E®, we have improved the overall quality of the new housing available in the North of Scotland. The Super E® program allows us to build attractive, premium quality houses which can also offer significant annual energy savings.”

Environ Sunley – Another Winning Combination

Super E® success continues at the Environ Sunley communities in West Malling, Kent. Following the launch of the UK’s first Super E® house in April 2002, the demand for the Canadian housing programme has escalated. Developers, Environ Sunley are building an additional 63 Super E® homes this year on their two sites at Kings Hill, West Malling. Thirty homes are currently under construction at their award winning Lacuna development, and thirty-three more at their prestigious Kings Hill Park development.

Pam Reardon from Environ Sunley comments, “The Super E® Trademark gives us an opportunity to distinguish ourselves from the competition. People who buy a Super E® home know that they are making an investment in state of the art housing which offers health benefits to them and their family. Super E® homes offer the best indoor air quality available as a result of utilising advanced mechanical systems technology and healthy building materials, which have little or no chemical emissions.”

Notes to Editors: Key Benefits of a Super E® House

  • Quality – the scheme uses the best designs, products and systems. All meet strict performance standards thus ensuring a high quality, tested and registered house
  • Comfort – the houses are well insulated and draft free, allowing easy control of indoor temperature, humidity and ventilation for easy breathing and maximum comfort
  • Durability – a rain screen is a leading edge Canadian system to protect walls from driving rain by using construction techniques that create a pressure equalized wall cavity, preventing rain from getting inside the wall. A rain screen combined with a vented wall cavity increases durability by keeping the rain out and letting any accumulated moisture escape
  • Cost effectiveness – affordability twinned with lower operating costs reduce the monthly cost of home ownership
  • Energy efficiency – years of research and development result in extremely efficient buildings
  • Indoor air quality – the choice of healthy building materials creates a healthier indoor environment. In addition, ventilation and climate control systems provide the best indoor air quality
